Weekly Training Log: Week of January 27th, 2014: The 16 week build, intentionally ignoring my run, and a Super Bowl blow-out

So it starts.  January 25th was exactly 16 weeks from Ironman number one of 2014.

I have never really done any sort of real structure for my Ironman training before as far as true periodization, but am doing so this season.  This is for a few reasons including injuries, staleness, and burnout prevention.  All of my training in the past has revolved around consistently aiming to hit certain training volumes and not backing off of it until the end of the season.  Although it worked for three very successful full distance races in 2012, I don't want to push it that way again this year.  As I learned from a busted up foot last July, I have far too much to lose by not taking a smarter and possibly more conservative (at times) approach to training and racing in 2014.

So with that said - It was a successful week #1 of the 16 week block last week.  I will be aiming at breaking these 16 weeks into four smaller blocks of four weeks each.  This first block will be a week on, week off (lower volume), week on of higher volume, then a week of lower volume.  The next two four week segments will be done at 3 on/1 off (lower volume), then the last four week segment will be 2.5 weeks hard building in both volume and intensity with a 1.5 week or 10 day taper.

So other than training, last week was pretty good.  I had an average week at work and home, with some sleep issues from our little boy, but nothing that out of the ordinary.  Then, the game I was looking forward to on Sunday Just never really came around, and that was disappointing...  Thank you to the Denver Broncos for a great year of football!  I look forward to getting down to training camp again in August and gearing up for another run at the Superbowl.
