Weekly Training Log - March 24th through March 30th

I had a goal of getting a ton of training mileage in over my Spring Break in Maui.  I had a nice start to the week then got sick instead.  The sickness only really killed one day, but kind of zapped me from doing what I wanted training wise.

I'll take it though.  I got through the week and had some forced rest...  Most importantly, I was in Maui - with my family and little boy - all was very good.

Weeks like this are amazing.  I will always be so thankful to have the opportunity to get over to Maui and visit with family.  I am truly blessed.

I am back home, and will have a nice quiet week before I see my wife and son on Sunday morning.  It'll be nice, but I do miss them.  Less than 2 weeks till Boston - Ill get some good miles in this week before a fairly easy rest week going into the marathon.

Aloha

Weekly totals

Run: 33.2 miles (including a walk to Maui Brewing Co.)
Bike: 142 miles, ~7 hours
Swim: ha....  Okay, I'll get in the pool next week

Weekly training log - St. Patty's through March 23rd

The week started in Boulder and ended in Maui.  Thats good and that means more miles.  I think I had the best run session of my life on Monday and had a big pr in the 13.1 distance on Saturday.  I think that I am recovering well.

All in all, I feel some good progress.  Fitness is at a much higher level now than it was last year at this time... I hope that can only mean good, but as I have seen from my swimming background, I know it's not always the case.  I am hopeful and I am impressed with the TT result from Saturday.

Saturday was the Valley to the Sea Half Marathon and I had a nice PR (and course record, oh boy) on the course.  It's a fast point to point course and good net downhill.  Overall time was a 1:16:30 and had a first place overall finish.  Good deal.

The start was very fast.  The first 3.5 miles are downhill and set my fastest 5k, 10k and 10 mi time in the process.  I think I went through 5k at 16:48, 10K at 35:40ish, and 10 miles at 58ish.  There is a .8 mile beach run portion that went well this year.  I am learning to pick my place in the sand to run.

Other than that, I have my P3 here and have ridden every day.  I rode home the 30 miles from the race on Sat and it went great.  Life is good and Maui is great...  I am very happy with how I am feeling this time in the year.

I think the elite card might come this year.  Aloha.

Weekly totals

Run: 45.1 miles
Bike: 162 miles, 8 hours
Swim: Nadda, nope, damn.

Weekly Training Log for March 11th Through March 17th

This past week was somewhat of a recovery week for me.  Intensity and key sessions stayed while total volume went down.  I also decided to take two full days of no workouts on Sat/Sun.
I originally was planning on heading down to Moab, Utah for the weekend to race the Canyonlands Half Marathon, but couldn't make that work.  I decided to stay home and make the best of a few easy days with my wife and kid.

I feel like those days payed off because on Monday I had the best run workout of my life and was very happy with it.

Weekly training goals for this week are 40-50 miles running, and 8 hours on the bike.  I will be heading to Maui on Thursday and will be racing the Valley to the Sea Half Marathon on Saturday.  Can't wait!

Aloha and happy training

Sunday - Skipped the long run and a bike to go to the aquarium with my mother in law, wife, and Aiden.  I am very glad I did.

Going for Broke

I am all in for 2013.

Never have I had this sort of motivation, never have I been this fit in March, never have I cared like I currently do about a sport that I participate in, never ever have I had athletic goals like this.

All of this has a huge downside though. I might break myself in this process.

The first way I break is by actually breaking. That would suck. Injuries suck - real bad. My training involves lots of intensity and I may be setting myself up for failure if I am not careful.

The next way I could break (and is more likely) is through burnout. I am in some control over this so I guess it's ultimately up to me to watch out for this. If anyone who is reading this has any experiences or tips to share, please do!

This being said, I am very hopeful given where I am on this 13th of March. It's gonna be a good year if I can hold it together. It's gonna be a really good year. It'll be an extra good year if I remember to start swimming more than a week before I go to race.

Happy training! It's looking more like spring in Boulder and I'm cool with that - rooftop beers can't come soon enough.
